Between a bar stool and a church pew…

Well, I have a new single going to radio today! The song is called “Jesus and Hank”. The song isn’t a true life story about my upbringing, but it does relate to me in a way…and that’s why I recorded it. Here’s a short background about me. I was raised in the Church of Christ. I attended Camp Blue Haven Church Camp every summer where I was a master camper and after high school I went to Lubbock Christian University. Alright, you get the picture. Let’s just say that my parents have always pointed me in the right direction. I was blessed with a great mom and dad. So, how did I end up out here on the honky tonk circuit making a living under the neon lights?!?! It’s simple really. This is my ministry.

Often I’m asked by my family and friends…”Why don’t you sing Christian music? You can tour churches and then you wouldn’t have to play bars at night.” Well, my answer to them is always….”Because that’s not where God wants me to be right now.” I think many of us forget that Jesus didn’t just hang out with his followers…He ate with sinners.

Luke 15:1-2 “Then all the tax collectors and the sinners drew near to Him to hear Him. 2 And the Pharisees and scribes complained, saying, “This Man receives sinners and eats with them.”

Hey now, don’t get me wrong…I’m not saying that everyone that hangs out at a dancehall needs saving. All I’m saying is that we are all sinners, and if there is one person out in the crowd at a Jake Kellen show, that is broken hearted or lost and confused…then perhaps I can encourage them, and share my love for Jesus Christ with them.

Luke 15:7 “I say to you that likewise there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine just persons who need no repentance.”

Here’s the new song! I hope you guys like it. Call your local radio station and request it if you do! Thanks and God Bless! – JK

  3. […] My good friend Jake Kellen just released a new song and he writes about it on his blog. He explains why he has chosen to do what he does and reminds us that everyone is in need of the grace of God. Check out Between a Bar Stool and a Church Pew […]

Well now Jake I appreciate your comments on this song. I once heard the great Ricky Skaggs say, “The Bible says that Christians ought to be in the world but not of it. – Translation: We ought to be of the church but not it.” I’m all over that.
